General Overview

This course builds on geological concepts acquired in Lower and Upper Sixth, enabling learners to understand the Earth's structure, geological processes, mineral resources, and their applications. Students will develop practical skills in geological observation, map interpretation, rock and mineral identification, and environmental analysis, in line with the Cameroon GCE Advanced Level syllabus.

Compulsory Materials

  • Geology textbook approved for the Cameroon GCE Advanced Level.
  • Notebook or digital note-taking application.
  • Geological maps, topographic maps, and cross-section diagrams.
  • Scientific calculator.
  • Pen, pencil, ruler, eraser, coloured pencils, and graph book.
  • Mobile device for accessing Yakili lessons, quizzes, and practical activities.

    Recommended Materials

    • Rock and mineral identification charts.
    • Geological atlas and fieldwork guides.
    • Supplementary geology reference books and past GCE examination questions.
    • Educational videos, animations, and virtual geological field trips available on Yakili.

    Skills and Competencies Required

    • Good understanding of Ordinary Level Geology and basic Earth Science concepts.
    • Basic knowledge of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Geography.
    • Ability to observe, classify, interpret diagrams, and analyze scientific data.
    • Logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.

    Online Learning Requirements

    • Reliable internet connection for streaming lessons and completing assessments.
    • Smartphone, tablet, or computer with sufficient storage.
    • Active participation in quizzes, assignments, discussions, and practical exercises.
    • Commitment to regular study, revision, and timely submission of coursework.
This course prepares learners for the Cameroon GCE Advanced Level examination while developing scientific inquiry, analytical thinking, and practical geological skills applicable in environmental management, mining, engineering, agriculture, and Earth science careers.

Course Description

This course provides an advanced study of geological processes, Earth's structure, rocks, minerals, fossils, structural geology, geomorphology, and economic geology. Learners develop practical skills in geological mapping, interpretation, environmental conservation, and resource management while preparing for the Cameroon GCE Advanced Level examination.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this online course, learners should be able to:

1. Earth Materials and Processes

  • Explain the structure and composition of the Earth.
  • Identify and classify rocks, minerals, and fossils using their physical and chemical properties.
  • Describe the geological processes responsible for the formation and transformation of rocks.

2. Structural and Historical Geology

  • Interpret geological structures including folds, faults, joints, and unconformities.
  • Explain the geological history of the Earth using fossils and rock sequences.
  • Apply principles of stratigraphy and geological time in geological investigations.

3. Geomorphology and Environmental Geology

  • Explain the processes that shape landforms through weathering, erosion, transportation, and deposition.
  • Assess the effects of geological hazards and environmental changes.
  • Recommend appropriate methods for conserving geological resources and the environment.

    4. Economic Geology

    • Identify economically important minerals, rocks, and energy resources.
    • Explain the occurrence, extraction, and sustainable utilization of geological resources in Cameroon and beyond.
    • Evaluate the contribution of geology to national development and industrial growth.

    5. Geological Investigation Skills

    • Interpret geological maps, cross-sections, and topographic maps accurately.
    • Analyze geological data and solve practical geological problems.
    • Apply scientific methods during geological observations and field-based investigations.

    6. Digital and Practical Competencies

    • Use digital learning resources, geological simulations, and online assessment tools effectively.
    • Complete practical activities, assignments, and quizzes on Yakili.
    • Demonstrate critical thinking, scientific communication, and independent learning skills required for success in higher education and Earth science careers.
